Remembering a 1991 ski mountaineering trip on Mount Sanford, Alaska by Kaj Bune

In the spring of 1991, Mark Dale, Dave Gloger, Steve Eastwood, Doug Barlow, Steve Mittendorf and I spent several weeks climbing and skiing the giant Alaskan volcano, Mount Sanford, which anchors the north western edge of the Wrangell-Saint Elias mountains. It was another fantastic trip in a very wild place, offering solitude (although we did meet Dutch solo climber, Arie Korving, along the way), adventure, challenge and surprisingly good skiing conditions most of the time. Great people, great time! Here are a few photos from the trip.

When I worked at Outdoor Research, we teamed up with Martin Volken to expand the skimo races he had been organizing. It’s a brutal form of ski racing, combining the endurance for the uphill with the technical ski skills for the downhill.

Here are a few photos from those early races.
